Howard Shultz "Sparky" Young



Howard Shultz "Sparky" Young was born November 12, 1921 in Monroe Township near West Union and departed this life on Feb 18, 2001, at the age of 79 years, 3 months, and 6 days. After graduation from West Union High School in 1940, he worked for Roy C. Mosier until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. He served his country both in the U.S. and overseas until his honorable discharge on February 1, 1946. As a staff sargeant, he received the following awards; Good Conduct Medal; Campaign Medal with two bronze stars; W.W. II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal with three battle stars; and Meritorious Unit Award. Upon his discharge from the army, he worked for Roy C. Mosier and Ella Dorton as a farm implement mechanic. From 1960 until his retirement in 1984, he worked for McGovney Construction Co. and Ferguson, Inc., as a construction equipment mechanic. On October 17, 1953, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Jane Lloyd. They shared 47 years of marriage and had three loving daughters. He was a member of the West Union Christian Union Church; West Union American Legion Post #100; lifetime member of Ohio Operating Engineers Local #18; and a lifetime member of the 12 Armored Division, 134th Maintenance Battalion. A hardworking, kind, caring, and sensitive man, he was a friend to all who knew him. He was a loving husband, a kind and generous dad, and a papa who was special to each one of his grandchildren. He was the oldest son of Bert O. and Mary Shultz Young. He is survived by his wife Phyllis and three daughters; Marilyn Newman, Connie Bradford, and Debbie Newman. Also surviving are three sons-in-laws; David Newman, Ronnie Bradford, and Larry Newman; three grandchildren; Wesley Newman, Rachel Newman, Sarah Newman, and one step-granddaughter, Amy Bradford. He also leaves one brother, Edward Young; three sisters, Martha Ralston, Geraldine Buchner, Grace Young; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Young and Virginia Satterfield, one brother-in-law, Robert Buchner; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Ione Mosier.
