Lela Elva Nichols Turner



Lela Elva Nichols Turner of Oklahoma City, Okla, passed away July 14, 2001. She was born Oct. 6, 1905, at the family farm home in Adams County near Peebles, Ohio, the third of 12 children to Joe Nichols and Iva Purtee Shoemaker Nichols. She attended school at the one-room Peach Mt. School House. Later Lela and her older sister Opal moved to Portsmouth, Ohio, where they worked at a shoe factory. Then they moved to Louisville, Ky., where Lela met her husband, Clayton Turner. They moved in 1927; heard of the oil boom headed for Oklahoma in 1929. Clayton passed away in 1972. Lela became affiliated with Oklahoma Poetry Society and her poems appeared in numerous publications including Red Earth, Christian Poet, Daily Oklahoman, and The Chipmunk. She was active in Toastmistress Club, and at age 74 was awarded first prize in Oklahoma state competition. She was a member of Ridgecrest Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Bobby and Buddy, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
