JAMES DAULTON TAKEN BY DEATH

West End Grocer, Here For Years, Was Native Of Brown County

James William Daulton, 72, prominent West End grocer for many years, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at his home, 316 Second street, after an illness of complications. Mr. Daulton had not been well for sometime, but his condition had been serious only the last few weeks. Mr. Daulton was widely known in the West End, where he had lived since 1909 and had conducted his grocery store during that time. The store always was located in the West End, its present location being Second and Jefferson streets. A native of Brown county, Mr. Daulton had lived there and in Adams county until 1890 when he located on a farm on the West Side, Scioto County, and was in the farming business with his brother John Daulton. He located in Portsmouth in 1909 and opened a grocery store. He and his brother had been associated in business all their lives, the brother operating the farm and Mr. Daulton looking after the grocery business. Mr. Daulton was born Feb. 27, 1868, near Ripley, a son of William and Catherine McClain Daulton. He was married in 1889 to Josephine Myers, who preceded him in death in 1933. Mr. Daulton was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. Surviving are three children: Mrs. Lucy Henson at home, Maurice Daulton of the West Side and Henry Daulton, 2101 Scioto Trail. He also leaves 10 grandchildren and his brother, John Daulton of the West Side. Two sisters, Mrs. Benjamin Burnett and Mrs. Joseph Birgle of Hamilton, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday at Friendship Methodist church, with Rev. A. K. Wilson of Bigelow church officiating. Burial will be in Friendship cemetery under the direction of Lynn. The body is at the residence.
